A journey of learning and connection on the Philippines Immersion

08 August 2024

John Paul College provides students with opportunities for service through Immersion experiences, where they work with local communities to support the impoverished in schools, orphanages, and disability and aged care facilities.

The recent Philippines Immersion trip was especially transformative, offering students a unique chance to explore diverse cultures and understand different ways of life. Many participants returned with a newfound respect for cultural diversity and a clearer understanding of their own identities. Through their meaningful contributions to the community, they gained valuable insights into international culture within a Catholic context.

The Philippines Immersion experience will probably be one of the most memorable, eye-opening experiences in my life. I left with a deeper appreciation for different cultures and a better sense of who I am.

While in Manila and Quezon City, students observed the significant efforts of local parishes and organisations dedicated to alleviating poverty. These groups offer crucial services, such as scholarships for children's education, social support, and feeding programs. The FCJ Centre, led by Sr. Paola, plays a vital role in empowering individuals through job creation and skills training, helping to break the cycle of poverty and foster hope within the community.

The trip was made possible thanks to the dedication and support of John Paul College staff and Catholic Mission facilitators, who ensured the students had impactful and meaningful experiences. The students returned with a renewed commitment to social justice and a strong desire to contribute positively to the world.
