Transitioning to high school was a big step. With more to learn, many opportunities and new people, I was excited. Although none of the students from my primary school moved to JPC, I was ready to face the challenge of finding friends. In the first few weeks I had found a group of friends who I hang out with in class, at lunch times and in group activities. John Paul College has proven to me, as an excellent place to start high school. Staff are always willing to help out and are consistently supporting us. And the senior years are teaching and guiding us to where we need to go.
So far in my year 7 journey, my favourite thing about John Paul College is the canteen. Although it is quite popular and chaotic, the distinctive menu has made me and many of my classmates satisfied. Another thing I love about JPC is the Resource Centre. The Resource Centre is an open space where you can read, study, socialise, or enjoy some time alone. I personally enjoy reading the books, from horror to manga, our school’s library is a calm space to relax.

As I reflect on my first few months at John Paul College, there have been so many highlights that have shaped my growth. This includes my experiences during the Year 7 retreats to Luna Park, Cable Park, and Gumbuya World. At these locations, I admired the nerve-racking rides, thrilling water slides, and unforgettable fun.
Moving to high school came with many challenges. One of the biggest was starting school without knowing anyone. Most of the Year 7s already had friend groups, which made it harder for me to feel included, especially since I was from a school no one was familiar with. Fortunately, I shortly found a small group of friends who accept me for who I am today. My friends and I bonded through support, helping each other out and cherishing the time we spend together.

John Paul taught me an important lesson at the Year 7 retreat: no matter how hard you try to impress others or change to meet their expectations, 50% of the people you meet won’t like you. However, the other 50% will like you just as you are — even if you don’t feel the same way about them. So, if you be who you are, you’ll naturally attract those who appreciate you for being yourself. Ultimately, there’s no point in putting on a mask or changing your personality.
At the beginning of this year, I set multiple goals that I am hoping to achieve by the end of the year. These goals include joining either the mixed badminton team, or the girls’ handball team; cooking and/or baking delicious meals in food tech and progressing my knowledge in music classes and instrument lessons. I’m excited about the chapter ahead, fulfilling my goals, making new friends, and exploring the learning opportunities at John Paul College.
