Reflecting on achievements and welcoming opportunities

18 February 2024

Michael O'Keeffe, Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching.

As we kick off the new academic year at John Paul College, we're excited to welcome back our wonderful community of parents, students, and staff. We hope you had a fantastic summer break and are ready for an exciting year ahead.

A new year brings with it a fresh start and it gives us a chance to reset and renew. It's an opportunity to reflect on the past, acknowledge our successes, and learn from our mistakes. As we embrace this new beginning, we have the freedom to bring with us the lessons learned and the experiences gained, leaving behind anything that may have held us back.

At John Paul College, we believe in the importance of growth and development. You are not defined by your past actions or achievements; rather, you are empowered to shape your own future and strive for excellence.

Michael O'Keeffe

With pride, we reflect on our remarkable achievements in 2023, particularly in our VCE results. The numbers speak volumes about the hard work from our students and teachers.

  • 20% of our Year 12s achieved ATARs exceeding 80
  • Median ATAR increased by 11%.
  • Median Study Score increased by 3.5%.
  • 24% of students scored 40 or above in at least 1 subject.
  • Asher Johnston (Year 11, 2023) achieved a perfect Study Score of 50 in Psychology.
  • 13 out of 22 subjects with a score of 40 or above with all leading areas represented.

Our Vocational Major (VM) students have achieved remarkable success, with many transitioning seamlessly into apprenticeships or employment opportunities upon completing their VM certificate. Their dedication to vocational education has opened doors to a diverse range of career pathways, allowing them to gain practical skills and real-world experience in their chosen fields.

This year marks a significant shift in our curriculum at John Paul College, with several new offerings designed to provide a diverse range of opportunities for our students. For the first time in our school's history, we've introduced VCE VET subjects, including VET Business and VET Sport and Recreation, providing students with practical, industry-relevant skills.

Our Year 8 students have selected their Arts and Technology subjects, reflecting our commitment to offering a well-rounded education. Additionally, at the Year 10 level, we're introducing new subjects such as Advanced English, Economics, and Global Politics, while welcoming Environmental Science into our Science offerings. These changes aim to align our curriculum with the evolving needs and interests of our student body, ensuring that each student has access to pathways that resonate with their aspirations.

As we embrace these changes, it's crucial to recognise that this is just one step in our ongoing journey towards providing a diverse and inclusive curriculum that caters to the diverse pathways of all our students. Our data highlights the importance of this approach, with a significant number of students opting for paths beyond traditional university education. With our largest Year 11 and 12 cohort undertaking the Vocational Major (VM) this year, we are proud to offer a curriculum that embraces and celebrates the diverse talents and aspirations of our students.

We're dedicated to creating a vibrant and dynamic learning community where every student feels supported and empowered to achieve their full potential.

Here's to an inspiring and successful year ahead at John Paul College!
