Inspiring ideas take centre stage at TEDx JPC

26 March 2025

At the inaugural TEDx JPC event, eight students and our Deputy Principal took to the stage to share the powerful ideas they had spent months preparing. Each speaker brought a unique perspective, tackling topics that challenged, motivated, and encouraged us to see the world differently. While some of these students may not usually seek the spotlight, they bravely shared their stories and delivered messages that left a lasting impact on the audience.

For our speakers, the journey to TEDx JPC was about more than just crafting a speech - it was an opportunity for personal growth, overcoming fears, and gaining the confidence to stand before a crowd and use their voice to share their message. Through months of preparation, each speaker developed their communication skills, strengthened their leadership, and discovered the power of storytelling.

Blake, Year 12, opened the night with his personal experience of being autistic, challenging stereotypes and urging us to embrace neurodiversity with empathy and understanding. Emily, Year 8, followed with a passionate reflection on the harm caused by bullying - particularly when directed at those seen as ‘too smart’ - and called on us all to stand up against this behaviour.

Bullying based on intelligence is a growing issue in schools. Despite my nerves and lack of confidence as a speaker, I learned that people will listen if you take the chance to speak up. My advice to future TEDx speakers: don’t be afraid, be confident, and HAVE FUN.

Nick, Year 12, explored the rise of artificial intelligence and deepfakes, raising thought-provoking questions about authenticity and trust in a digital age where it’s harder than ever to tell what’s real. Sydney and Nadia, both Year 9, spoke about the power of simple technology to build empathy, break down prejudice, and help us see the world from another’s perspective.

TEDx was an incredible opportunity to share our passion for empathy and human connection on a global stage. It was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating, but we learned the power of vulnerability in creating real connections. Seeing the audience react and knowing our words sparked thought was deeply rewarding. TEDx boosted our confidence, proving that our voices matter and our ideas can make an impact.

Our Deputy Principal, Michael O’Keeffe, then tackled one of education’s biggest challenges -  the growing teacher shortage. He shared insights into why fewer people are choosing the profession and urged us to reimagine how we value and support teachers.

Eleanor, Year 8, shared her personal journey with anxiety, inspiring others to push through fear and embrace the things they love - from acting to art - even when it feels daunting. Abigail, Year 10, challenged the idea of sticking to one career for life and encouraged us to embrace change, adaptability, and the opportunities that come with exploring different paths.

Closing the event, Rahul, Year 12, reflected on the importance of communication and listening. He reminded us that conversations - grounded in empathy and understanding -  have the power to strengthen relationships, break down barriers, and create lasting impact.

The most rewarding part of my TEDx experience was heading back on stage with everyone after we’d all finished. My advice to future TEDx speakers is don’t stress if your talk changes a bit—nerves make you adjust your words. Stepping off the stage, I was worried I messed up, but that quickly passed, and I felt super relieved!

TEDx JPC gave these speakers more than just a platform - it provided the opportunity to grow, connect, and inspire. Their courage, passion, and dedication to bringing their ideas to life were truly commendable. We couldn’t be prouder of each of them for stepping up, sharing their stories, and making the night such a success.
