Principal's Desk - Edition 1, 2025

27 February 2025

It is with profound sadness that we learned of the recent passing of Br Don Neff, SM, a leader whose dedication and faith were instrumental in shaping the foundations of John Paul College. As the inaugural Principal of our College and former Principal of Marianist College, Br Neff's legacy is deeply embedded in our history and continues to influence our community's ethos and direction.

Br Neff's journey with our community began in 1973 when he led the establishment of Marianist College, a boys' school founded by the Society of Mary (Marianists). Under his guidance, the College quickly grew, both in student numbers and facilities, reflecting his commitment to providing quality Catholic education. His leadership in those early, challenging times, was marked by a deep sense of faith, inclusivity, and a passion for nurturing the potential of every student.

In 1979, recognising the evolving educational needs of the Frankston region, Br Neff played a pivotal role in the amalgamation of Marianist College and Stella Maris College, leading to the formation of John Paul College. As the inaugural Principal, he was instrumental in uniting the two communities, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect in the new co-educational institution.

Br Neff's influence extended beyond his expertise in administrative leadership with a deep knowledge of, and dedication to, the model of the Marianist Characteristics of Education. These characteristics, along with the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) educational foundations are the bedrock on which the values of John Paul College were built, and which continue to guide us:

Educating for Formation in Faith: Br Neff was deeply committed to fostering a strong faith life within the school community. He believed in education that encouraged students and staff to grow in their relationship with God, developing a sense of purpose and a commitment to Gospel values.

Providing an Integral, Quality Education: Br Neff championed learning that nurtured not only the mind but also the heart and spirit. He sought to develop well-rounded individuals, emphasising both academic excellence and personal growth.

Educating in Family Spirit: Br Neff understood that a school is more than just a place of learning—it is a family. He worked to create a community where students, staff, and families felt a deep sense of belonging, mutual support, and care for one another.

Educating for Service, Justice, and Peace: A man of compassion and justice, Br Neff instilled in the community a sense of responsibility toward others and encouraged students to engage in acts of service.

Educating for Adaptation and Change: As a leader, Br Neff embraced change with courage and faith. He played a crucial role in adapting to the evolving needs of Catholic education in the Frankston region, ensuring that John Paul College was at the heart of this community.

These values, which continue to guide our College today, were his touchstone and the measure of success. His commitment to education and the Frankston region has left an indelible mark on our community.

Br Neff's life is a true picture of his personal dedication to education and faith. Celebrating 70 years of profession as a Marianist several years ago, he reflected on his vocation with humility and gratitude. In his own words, he described his journey as a tapestry woven with threads of service, community, and an enduring commitment to the teachings of Christ. He emphasised the importance of adaptability, noting that while times and educational landscapes change, the core values of faith, compassion, and respect remain steadfast.

In honouring Br Neff's memory, we are called to continue his mission:

  • Faith in Action: Let us strive to live out our faith through acts of service and social justice.
  • Commitment to Excellence: Upholding the standard of excellence in all our endeavours, be it academic, spiritual, or communal.
  • Community Spirit: Fostering a sense of belonging and unity, ensuring that every member of our community feels connected and valued.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Marianist community and all who were touched by Br Neff's wisdom and kindness. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we, as a community, continue to honour his legacy through our actions and commitments.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Yours in faith,

John Visentin - Principal
