The impact of devices on teen sleep

12 March 2025

Many teenagers struggle to get enough sleep, and late-night screen use is a major factor. The blue light from devices suppresses melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep, while social media, group chats, and streaming keep teens engaged well past bedtime. This constant connectivity can lead to exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, mood swings, and increased stress, affecting both academic performance and overall well-being.

Even with parental controls, teens often find ways around restrictions, staying up late to check notifications, respond to messages, or scroll through social media. Exposure to endless content - sometimes negative or distressing - can also contribute to anxiety and difficulty winding down.

A simple way to promote better sleep is to keep devices out of the bedroom at night. Charging phones in another room and encouraging screen-free wind-down routines such as reading, journaling, or listening to music can help improve focus, emotional well-being, and long-term health.
