VM Students Engage in Creative and Community Projects

14 June 2024

Visit from Victoria Police

On 6th June, Year 12 VCE VM students were visited by local police officers, who shared insights into their careers and sparked interest in law enforcement among some students.

This experience has deepened our students' understanding of health interrelationships and community support, fostering their commitment to learning and service.

'Songs For You' Project

Partnering with Skye Lodge and Embraced, students gather stories and shared experiences from elderly residents to create original songs. Guided by Embraced, they learn essential songwriting skills. These collaborative songs will be performed on August 29th during Term 3.

Through these projects, our students are not only developing their artistic and musical talents but also fostering strong intergenerational bonds and raising community awareness on important social issues.

"Songs For You promotes knowledge exchange and facilitates meaningful learning experiences. Through the creation of songs, participants share stories, recount triumphs, express sorrows, and offer messages of hope."

Road Safety Awareness with TRAG

On June 4th, Year 12 VCE VM students attended a session with the Teenage Road Accident Group (TRAG) to hear firsthand accounts from CFA members, ambulance officers, police officers, and road trauma survivors. The goal was to raise awareness of their responsibilities as future drivers.

Intergenerational Painting Project

In pairs, students work with elderly residents from Skye Lodge to create paintings. During the first session, they collaboratively develop a plan for their artwork. The finished paintings will be showcased at both Skye Lodge and John Paul College. Additionally, these students will lead a lesson at St John's Primary School on June 24th, focusing on raising awareness about disabilities, a theme chosen by the Year 12 students.

Working Bee at Stella Maris

Year 11 Vocational Major students have begun working on the restoration of the Stella Maris grounds and classrooms. Stella Maris is named after the Stella Maris fcJ College for girls which was established on this land in 1968. John Paul College was founded in 1979 in the merger of Stella Maris and Marianist College for boys.

Stella Maris is now the home of our Vocational Major program and students are working towards injecting life and colour into the space whilst developing their practical and work related skills. This project has seen applied learning in action and many of the students have been able to shine and share their skills and creative capacity.
