VCE VM students’ active learning experiences

02 August 2024

Our Year 12 VCE VM students have been actively engaging in a variety of enriching experiences, from leading disability awareness activities at St John’s Primary School to participating in the Road to Zero excursion at Melbourne Museum. These opportunities have not only fostered personal growth but also deepened their understanding of important social issues.

Personal development skills at St John’s Primary School

Students visited St John’s Primary School to lead activities for Grade 3 and 4 students, focusing on raising awareness of disabilities. The 15 students organised various engaging activities, including Words Can Hurt, reading and discussing a book on autism, learning sign language, the Stroop Test, a Senses Walk, and Braille decoding while playing 'Fish' using one hand. Both St John's and John Paul College students enjoyed the experience, making it a meaningful and memorable event.

Visit from Amy-Ruth Lewis of Black Dog Institute

An inspiring visit from Amy-Ruth Lewis of the Black Dog Institute left a lasting impression on our VCE VM students. Known for her mental health advocacy, Amy shared her experiences, including her involvement in fundraisers and community outreach. Her engaging discussion emphasised the importance of mental health awareness and inspired all who attended.

Road to Zero excursion

Participation in the Road to Zero exhibition by TAC and Melbourne Museum provided students with insights into road safety for 14-17-year-olds. They created impactful community health campaign videos on mobile phone use and bike riding safety and engaged in interactive experiences like the Crash Forces Elevator and the Safer Behaviours Quiz. Their creativity and commitment to promoting road safety were impressive.

Art project collaboration with Skye Lodge

Collaboration with Skye Lodge aged care residents on an art project allowed a group of VCE VM students to address ageism while enhancing skills such as communication, empathy, and respect. Both groups enjoyed the interaction, and the artwork will be displayed at both John Paul College and Skye Lodge later this term.

These diverse experiences provided our Year 12 VCE VM students with valuable learning opportunities, fostering personal growth, community engagement, and a deeper understanding of important social issues. We are proud of their efforts and achievements.
