Student Spotlight - Denzel, Year 7

13 August 2024

Denzel, one of our wonderful Year 7 students, has achieved remarkable success by earning a Certificate of Distinction in the Science Olympiad, placing him among the top 20% of all entrants. This international competition challenges young science enthusiasts, and Denzel's achievement illustrates his significant strength in the subject.

We caught up with Denzel to hear his thoughts on what makes Science exciting, his experience with the Science Olympiad, and his pride in his Certificate of Distinction. Learn about his favourite moments and advice for others students.

Welcome to the spotlight Denzel....

What do you enjoy most about Science?

The thing that I enjoy most about Science is probably the learning experience, you get to learn much more about the world, you get to learn about the inner workings of animals, the orbits of the planets, the physics of a falling feather for example.

What do you think makes Science exciting and fun to learn?

The thing that makes Science exciting is the experiments that you get to do because unlike most other subjects, Science is a more tactile experience, you get to do more experiments and get more hands on with the subject you’re trying to learn about.

What made you want to participate in the Science Olympiad?

I wanted to test my knowledge about the Sciences I already knew, I thought it would be a fun experience to challenge myself outside of the classroom with a new experience that I wasn’t familiar with.

How did you feel when you found out you earned a Certificate of Distinction?

I felt pretty happy about myself, I didn’t think I was going to win anything but the fact that I did really boost my confidence in Science.

What was the most fun part of taking part in the Science Olympiad?

The most fun part, was again, challenging myself, I got to test myself in Biology, Physics and other subjects that otherwise were foreign to me.

Do you have a favourite scientist or experiment that inspires you?

My favourite scientist would probably be Albert Einstein and my favourite experiment would be Schrodinger’s Cat, it’s a famous thought experiment that I really draw from and are inspired by.

How do you like to explore science outside of school?

I like to learn from different sources such as videos and books.

What advice would you give to other students who want to do well in the Science Olympiad?

Study a lot more because the Science Olympiad is a test that tests a broad number of sciences.

Is there a particular area of science you’re excited to learn more about in the future?

It would probably be Physics, Calculus and Quantum Physics. In the future I hope to work in Computer Science.
