Welcome to Rose Coloured Glasses, my exploration of juxtaposition through the medium of gouache. I've created a striking 2-metre-tall painting of a part-deer, part-woman figure, rendered in a spectrum of pink tones, inviting you to delve into the ideas of misinterpretation and the underestimation of women.
In this piece, I’ve illustrated juxtaposition by using vibrant pink tones, which, alongside the female figure, traditionally evoke softness and delicacy. However, when contrasted with the strong, regal presence of the deer, the result creates a dynamic visual tension. This contrast encourages viewers to think about the balance between these opposing yet harmonised elements. I first developed the concept of the female deer figure in Unit 3 and expanded on it in Unit 4 by increasing the scale and painting the figure as a bold, standalone cut-out—further highlighting the theme of juxtaposition. The pinks I’ve chosen form an integral part of my visual language, and using gouache adds depth and texture to the work.
I’ve drawn inspiration from Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale, whose themes resonate with me, and I’ve also referenced Francis Dicksee’s works in developing the form of the woman. Both artists have profoundly influenced me, and through this piece, I transform traditional symbols to encourage a deeper exploration of the power of juxtaposition in art. For me, contrasts aren’t just oppositions; they can also be harmonies.
