The annual Founders’ Day assembly at John Paul College is a special occasion to honour our College’s rich heritage, tracing back to those who laid the foundation for our vibrant community. This assembly serves as a reminder of the individuals whose vision, dedication, and faith continue to shape the College, allowing each of us today to benefit from its many offerings.
This year’s assembly commenced with the presentation of symbols that reflect the core values, traditions, and faith upon which John Paul College is built. The College Banner, representing our school identity, the Cross, an emblem of our Catholic faith, the Message Stick, symbolising our commitment to respect and unity with Indigenous communities, the Book of Gospels and lastly, the College Memorial Book, honouring members of our community who have passed on, reminding us of their lasting impact.
We were honoured by the presence of distinguished guests, former Principal Mr. Davison and long-serving staff member, Mr. Jensen, whose legacy remains integral to our College. Though many years have passed since their time here, their connection to John Paul College endures, and each visit brings pride as they witness the growth and evolution of the College they helped shape. We were also joined by Sr. Barbara Brown Graham, Area Leader for the FCJ Province Centre, representing the FCJ Sisters, whose foundational role and educational values have become the bedrock of our mission.
Each year, Founders’ Day has a specific focus on one founding tradition of the College. This year we placed a special focus on Marie Madeleine D’Houet, the founder of D’Houet House. Marie Madeleine’s legacy of compassion, courage, and resilience has left an enduring mark on the FCJ Society, which she founded in 1820 during challenging times for religious orders in France. Her life reflects immense strength, from raising her son as a young widow to serving the sick and marginalised with unwavering dedication. When faced with adversity, she responded with profound trust, famously declaring, “Yes, Father, I accept,” a phrase that continues to inspire our community today.
Our assembly also included reflections from 2025 D’Houet House Leaders, Oscar and Jimmy, who shared what it means to them to lead with the spirit of their House. Ms. Blake, teacher, and former D’Houet House Captain, and Tayla Wilson, a recent participant in the Philippines Immersion, provided insights from their experiences with the FCJ sisters in the Philippines Immersion, where they witnessed first-hand the impact of the FCJ’s work in uplifting communities.
At the assembly, a series of awards highlighted the dedication, achievements, and leadership within our College community.
